Patricia von Musulin is an American designer of fashion jewelry. She started in the 1970s with immediate acclaim from the press and the fashion industry. Her jewelry is known for its chunky, sculptural nature, made from a wide array of materials, including plastics, wood, and sterling silver.
Patricia von Musulin founded her company in 1976. Her studio is in New York City, although the foundry that brings her designs to life is in Beacon, New York.
With a background in industrial design, von Musulin’s jewelry-making approach is very sculptural. “Most jewelers draw out jewelry, which in my mind, always makes it very flat. Whereas I actually make all the models originally in plaster. They’re made either to actual scale or larger, and then I refine them,” she said in an online feature with Elle magazine.
Many brands featured von Musulin’s designs in their advertising campaigns early in her career, including Estée Lauder, Clinique, and CoverGirl. Sportswear designers have also favored Von Musulin’s jewelry for runway shows. Big names like Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren, and Bill Blass have utilized her accessories to accentuate their fashions. More recently, her designs have been coupled with Rihanna’s lingerie brand Savage x Fenty in fashion shows.
Numerous celebrities have been photographed and filmed wearing her jewelry, including Christie Brinkley, Brooke Shields, and the late Farrah Fawcett. One of the most famous photos is “Nastassja Kinski and the Serpent,” taken by Richard Avedon. The provocative portrait features the actress wearing nothing but a von Musulin ivory bracelet and a large boa constrictor. Actress Nicole Ari Parker was also more recently spotted wearing von Musulin pieces in And Just Like That, the continuation of the popular HBO series Sex and the City.
The late Gloria Vanderbilt, a good friend of von Musulin’s, stated, “The jewels of Patricia von Musulin are sculptural works of art created by a genius.” The many fans of von Musulin’s adornment fervently seek her creations for their collectors of wearable art.
